Tattershall Castle
Tattershall Castle stands proud in the flat Lincolnshire countryside looking like every child’s image of a perfect sandcastle. Owned and run by the National Trust it is a perfect day out for history lovers of all ages. It consists of a five storey, hundred foot tower built on the site of the original castle which was there 300 years before.
Built in the 15th century by Ralph Cromwell, Lord Treasurer to Henry VI it is a fascinating building to explore. Start in the dungeons and work your way up the various floors and when you finally reach the top and peer over the battlements you are rewarded by lovely views of Tattershall church and the lakes. On a clear day it is possible to see Boston Stump and many other landmarks which are clearly pointed out on signs on the battlements.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was beginning to fall into disrepair and the beautiful fireplaces were going to be sold to a rich man in America. Luckily Lord Curzon stepped in, rescued the fireplaces and saved the castle from demolition.
As well looking round the castle, the grounds are great to wander around too with the moat being home to ducks and moorhens. Also with it being so near RAF Coningsby you may spot historic planes from The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flying overhead. There is a gift shop which sells food and drink and you are welcome to have a picnic in the grounds. The National Trust put on great events including Easter Egg Hunts, medieval re-enactments, open air theatre and a Christmas market.
Nearby is Tattershall Church which is worth looking round. Near the font is a plaque marking the grave of Tattershall resident Tom Thumb who was 18 inches tall and died in 1620 at the age of 101. His house is on the roof of a larger house in Tattershall Market Place.
