Local Cheeses made in Lincolnshire

  • January 2017
  • Local food

If you are a cheese lover Lincolnshire is a great place to visit. Blessed with three of its own local cheeses and two wonderful cheese shops you could spend almost all your time in our wonderful county indulging your passion.

Firstly we have Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese made on a farm on the edge of the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds. Simon Jones started to make Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese on the farm back in 1992 and from then on it has gone from strength to strength. The recipe for Lincolnshire Poacher is a cross between a traditional West Country cheddar and a continental alpine cheese such as Compte but it has its own unique texture and flavour. It can be bought at farmers markets and shops all over the county and beyond.

Lymn Bank Farm cheese is based in Thorpe St Peter near Skegness and is a family run business which came into being 13 years ago. Steve Grinstead is the man in charge and regularly comes up with new and exciting ideas for new cheeses. Lymn Bank staff produce about 10,000 cheeses each day in the main dairy which includes 10 types of waxed cheese. This adds up to 120 tonnes of cheese a year. More than 60 boxes of chutney are also produced. The cheeses and the chutney are sold both locally and nationally.

Cote Hill cheese is the only soft cheese to be made in Lincolnshire and is produced on a farm near Market Rasen. Michael and Mary Davenport have farmed at Cote Hill Farm for 30 years and started making cheese there in 2005 and from then on they have gone on to great success and have won many awards. It also can be bought both locally and all over the country.

If you like to choose from a great selection of cheeses the best places to go are the Cheese Society shop in Lincoln and the Cheese Shop in Louth,

Founded in 1997 by Kate O’Meara, the Cheese Society is based just off the High Street in the Cathedral Quarter of Lincoln. Originally it was based in a small industrial unit and only sold cheese by mail order. But now the business is busy and thriving and is loved by visitors and locals alike. They can even supply Cheese Wedding Cakes.

The Cheese Shop in Louth is an artisan delicatessen and sells Brithish and Continental cheeses, Deli Product, Ports and Champagnes and they make savoury and sweet tartsand scones and biscuits daily.
